Obschon Platon vielen als ‚Begründer‘ der Psychologie gilt, ist es umstritten, inwiefern sich Platons verschiedenen Ausführungen zur Seele zu einer eigentlichen psychologischen Theorie zusammensetzen. In diesem Band, der auf die Tübinger Platon-Tage 2024 zurückgeht, untersuchen dreizehn internationale Forscherinnen und Forscher verschiedene Aspekte von Platons Behandlung der Seele, die in einem engeren Sinn ‚psychologisch‘ genannt werden können, wie etwa seine Theorie der Wahrnehmung, der Begierde, der Lust oder der Vorstellung ( phantasia ). Ein besonderes Augenmerk gilt hierbei der Frage, inwiefern solche Phänomene psychophysisch sind, das heißt nicht nur die Seele, sondern auch den Körper betreffen. Hinzu kommen Beiträge, die klären möchten, was es für Platon bedeutet, dass die Seele ein Lebensprinzip und auch die Herrscherin über den Körper und seine Dispositionen und Prozesse ist. Schließlich widmen sich einige Aufsätze der Frage nach der mathematischen Konstitution der Seele bei Platon und in der Alten Akademie. Dabei werden zentrale platonische Texte, in denen von der Seele und seelischen Phänomenen die Rede ist, wie der Phaidon , der Theaitetos , der Timaios und der Philebos , aber auch etwa der Sophistes , auf frische Weise durchforstet. Insgesamt zeigen sich einige übergeordnete Tendenzen, zum Beispiel, dass für Platon die Frage nach der Rolle der Seele eng an die Frage der Rolle des Körpers geknüpft ist, und dass die Problemlage, mit der sich später Aristoteles auseinandersetzt, stark von Platon geprägt ist, und zwar nicht nur was den Status der Seele betrifft, sondern auch bezüglich des Beitrags des Körpers zur Erklärung seelischer Phänomene. So entsteht insgesamt eine Grundlage, auf der größere Fragen nach Platons Psychologie als einer einheitlichen Theorie der Seele und ihrer Funktionen weiterverfolgt werden können. Es entsteht aber auch eine Grundlage, um den Einfluss Platons auf die spätere Psychologie genauer zu erforschen, nicht nur innerhalb der platonischen Philosophie, sondern auch darüber hinaus in der aristotelischen Tradition bis in die Neuzeit und Moderne.
Although Plato is considered by many to be the „founder“ of psychology, it is controversial to what extent Plato’s various statements on the soul can be combined to form an actual psychological theory. In this volume, which stems from the 2024 Tübingen Platon-Tage, thirteen international researchers examine various aspects of Plato’s treatment of the soul that can be called „psychological“ in a narrower sense, such as his theory of perception, desire, pleasure, or imagination ( phantasia ). Particular attention is paid to the question of the extent to which such phenomena are psychophysical, i.e., they concern not only the soul but also the body. In addition, there are contributions that seek to clarify what it means for Plato that the soul is a principle of life and also the ruler of the body and its dispositions and processes. Finally, several contributors address the question of the mathematical constitution of the soul in Plato and in the Ancient Academy. In doing so, the volume takes a fresh look at key Platonic texts that discuss phenomena of the soul, such as the Phaedo , the Theaetetus , the Timaeus and the Philebus , but also, for example, the Sophist . As a result, several main trends emerge: for example, that for Plato the question of the role of the soul is closely linked to the question of the role of the body, and that the problem later addressed by Aristotle is strongly influenced by Plato, not only with regard to the status of the soul, but also with regard to the contribution of the body to the explanation of mental phenomena. Together, these findings provide a basis both for pursuing larger questions about Plato’s psychology as a unified theory and for exploring his influence on later traditions, from Aristotelianism to the modern era.
