Description

This book looks at divorce and remarriage in the Old Testament and the New Testament. It compares tradition, history, law, and contracts. Man was created to lead his family, and his wife was created to help him. That means, divorce and remarriage should be looked at through a patriarchal lens. Only the man was allowed to divorce his wife according to the Law of Moses (Deuteronomy 24:1). Jesus did not give women permission to initiate a divorce. If a woman did separate, she was commanded to remain unmarried or reconcile to her husband (1 Corinthians 7:10-11). The man was told he is free to marry when loosed from a wife (1 Corinthians 7:27-28). The divorced woman is not free to remarry unless she was put away, or her husband dies, releasing her from the law (rule of law) that bound her to him (Deuteronomy 24:1-4; Matthew 19:9; Romans 7:2; 1 Corinthians 7:39-40). Unless the woman was the wife of only one husband, she was not to partake in the widow’s fund (1 Timothy 5:9-10). Only men are selected for leadership in the Church if he was married once (1 Timothy 3:2). And those who practice sexual immorality will not inherit the Kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Galatians 5:19-21).
