Cet Andante, tout d’abord conçu, en 1803/1804, pour servir de mouvement lent à la Sonate pour piano en Ut majeur op. 53 (dite «Sonate Waldstein»), prit selon Beethoven de trop vastes proportions, et fut remplacé. Précédé de la mention «Grazioso con moto», ce mouvement est caractérisé par la grande diversité de ses techniques de composition, allant de la simple suite d’accords à des enchaînements d’octaves produisant un effet orchestral. En raison de sa grande popularité, ce mouvement isolé fut, dès son deuxième tirage, présenté comme «Andante favori» – un surnom sans doute attribué par Beethoven lui-même. Sur la base de ses travaux préparatoires à l’édition critique intégrale, Joanna Cobb Biermann, spécialiste de Beethoven, a soigneusement revu le texte musical de l’édition Henle Urtext, et signé la préface de cette nouvelle étape scientifique.
Das Andante war 1803/04 zunächst als langsamer Satz der Klaviersonate C-dur op. 53 (Waldsteinsonate) entstanden, geriet nach Meinung Beethovens aber zu lang und wurde ersetzt. Vermutlich 1805 gab Beethoven es einzeln zum Druck. Der „Grazioso con moto“ überschriebene Satz wird durch eine große Vielfalt an Satztechniken bestimmt, die von einfachen Akkordfolgen bis zu orchestral wirkenden Oktavläufen reicht. Wegen seiner besonderen Beliebtheit erschien der Einzelsatz in der zweiten Auflage als „Andante favori“ – ein Beiname, der angeblich auf Beethoven selbst zurückgeht. Auf Grundlage ihrer Vorarbeiten für die kritische Gesamtausgabe hat Beethoven-Spezialistin Joanna Cobb Biermann den Notentext der Henle-Urtextausgabe sorgfältig revidiert und das Vorwort auf den neuesten Stand der Wissenschaft gebracht.
First conceived in 1803/04 as the slow movement of the Piano Sonata in C major op. 53 (the “Waldstein” Sonata), the Andante turned out too long in Beethoven’s view and was replaced. Beethoven had it published as a standalone movement, presumably in 1805. The movement, marked “Grazioso con moto,” is characterised by a large variety of compositional techniques ranging from simple chord progressions to orchestral-like octave runs. Because of its particular popularity, this single movement was published as “Andante favori” in its second printing – a moniker that apparently harks back to Beethoven himself. Based on her preliminary research for the critical Complete Edition, Beethoven specialist Joanna Cobb Biermann has carefully revised the musical text of the Henle Urtext edition and updated the preface to reflect the latest scholarship.
