Description

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles
available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The Battle of
Fort Sumter (April 12-13, 1861) was the bombardment and surrender of
Fort Sumter, near Charleston, South Carolina, that started the American
Civil War. Following declarations of secession by seven Southern states,
South Carolina demanded that the U.S. Army abandon Fort Sumter, which
was refused. When the ultimatum deadline passed, an artillery barrage
ensued, lasting until the fort was surrendered. Once the Confederates
had fired, full-scale war quickly followed. The bombardment of Fort
Sumter was the first military action of the American Civil War.
Following the surrender, Northerners rallied behind Lincoln’s call for
all of the states to send troops to recapture the forts and preserve the
Union. With the scale of the rebellion apparently small so far, Lincoln
called for 75,000 volunteers for 90 days.
